Brown Harris Stevens Celebrates 2020 Agent Achievements In Virtual Ceremony

Brown Harris Stevens, one of the country’s largest privately owned real estate brokerages, has announced its agent award recipients recognized for outstanding production companywide and by region in 2020.  This marks the first awards ceremony since Brown Harris Stevens restructured to incorporate Halstead and celebrated both incoming and legacy Brown Harris Stevens agents. 

Due to Covid safety protocols, the interactive web-based ceremony was produced entirely in-house by the Brown Harris Stevens marketing team in conjunction with BrandLive. The awards were presented virtually to the agents by CEO Bess Freedman, New York City President Hall Willkie, Executive Chairman Diane Ramirez and Regional President Richard Grossman. The event also featured remarks by Terra Holdings Co-Chairmen William Zeckendorf and David Burris as well as Brown Harris Stevens COO Alan Kersner. 

Headlining the ceremony was special guest speaker Amy Purdy,  a celebrated Paralympic athlete, author, and renowned motivational speaker. Musical accompaniment was courtesy of a motivational Spotify list curated by Freedman herself with selections ranging from Broadway tunes to Hip-hop. BHS employees were also recognized for their hard work during the pandemic with a "night out on BHS" gift card to GrubHub.

“The 2020 Awards ceremony was the first time we truly celebrated together as one company and really showcased the depth of talent and breadth of our reach. I am so proud of the award recipients, and all of our incredible agents. This was a challenging year, but we got through it together, and are stronger for it,” said Freedman.

One of New York City’s Largest Murals At The Max in Hell’s Kitchen

Residents of The Max, TF Cornerstone’s luxury apartment complex in Hell’s Kitchen, are able to enjoy an expansive work from the building’s courtyard. TF Cornerstone has collaborated with karlssonwilker and a team of painters from ArtFX Murals are unveiling one of the largest murals they’ve ever worked on, and one of the largest in New York City.

In collaboration with the Poetry Society of NY, the commissioned work of 10 local poets, each designated to specific neighborhoods within the TFC portfolio, are included. The public domain poems also share a NYC theme. The poems focus on putting poetry in unexpected places and creating opportunities for New York poets to share their work outside of the typical literary and academic circles.

In the works since 2016, the project began by exploring the rich history of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, culminating in a vision of TF Cornerstone's evolving skyline within NYC's historical landscape. The mural also reflects the foundation of TF Cornerstone - a company rooted in family and community based development.

Discover The Wines of New York

New York heralds a rich and lengthy wine history, and continues to maintain strong relevancy as a wine producing area, coming third in place behind California and Washington state. The country’s first bonded winery was founded here in New York, and the oldest operating winery in America is housed in New York as well.

Now, New York wine country boasts seven official wine regions, along with several additional subregions. There are more than 1600 family vineyards and over 400 wineries throughout New York, with the wine (and grape) industry generating “more than $4.8 billion in economic benefits annually for New York State.” 

For those unfamiliar with the history of wine production, that says a lot. Evidence accounts for winemaking in ancient cultures dating back as far as 6,000 B.C. and New York’s community of wine producers continue adding onto this centuries old tradition.

If you’re interested in discovering some of the wines New York has to offer, here are a few New York wineries you should know:

Brotherhood Winery

The Brotherhood Winery was established in 1839, and is America’s oldest winery. Located in Washingtonville, New York, Brotherhood is less than an hour and a half from New York City, and welcomes guests for tours, tastings and live music. If you have a special occasion on the horizon, such as a wedding, birthday party or corporate gathering, the Grand Salon can accommodate. The 19th century space offers a charming setting with a deeply historic backdrop, making it the ideal destination for any memorable event. 

One Woman Wines & Vineyards

The name behind Claudia Purita’s Long Island winery is literal. An Italian native, she grew up on her family's farm and has brought the values learned to her vineyards. “Her Story” illustrates a woman who’s attentive to the smallest details, patient and willing to go above and beyond for the sake of quality. Out of that perseverance came an array of wines, with selections for those who favor red, white or pink. While her wines are available for purchase online, One Woman Wines also has a tasting room with nine wines available for tasting and seven reserve wines for purchase. 

Red Hook Winery

The Red Hook Winery opened in 2008 and since then, their focus has truly been on bringing New York wines to consumers. They produce all of their wines “from grape to bottle” at their urban winery on Pier 41 and sell a host of options for wine lovers to sip on- like orange wines and unique red and white blends. This winery has received quite a bit of media coverage, and perhaps for good reason. Celine Bossart recounts her visit for Edible Brooklyn: “there’s something that Red Hook Winery brings to the table that’s very different from the others in its class: whereas the typical négociant tends to keep the spotlight in one place (on itself), a sharing-is-caring approach is more their style.” Red Hook Winery is now open for outdoor seating and wine tastings, which you can book in advance on their website. Ben Ish Winery 

Ben Ish Winery is only one of less than a handful of wineries located in Brooklyn. The company only offers dry red wines that are kosher, and carry Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Old Vine Zinfandel. Currently, all of their wines are out of stock; which makes sense, as the winery has won several wine making competitions in the past. Perfect for those that like to stay indoors, Ben Ish Winery delivers throughout the five boroughs, as well as the Five Towns section of Long Island and Monsey, located in Rockland County, NY. Visiting NYC this Winter? Here's How to Avoid Getting Sick

When traveling on vacation, your chances of getting sick increase. Being in a new environment surrounded by lots more people can expose you to more bacteria and germs. People in the United States get approximately one billion colds every year. If you don’t have a plan of attack, you could end up spending your vacation time cooped up in bed rather than exploring all the sights. Here are ten tips on how to avoid getting sick when visiting New York City this winter.

Be Careful What You Eat

New York City is a food mecca of gourmet cuisines and street vendors. If you overeat, you will wind up getting sick and not be able to truly enjoy your vacation. Be wary of street vendors. You don’t know how fresh the food is. If it’s been sitting out all day, you could get food poisoning and end up spending your time in the emergency room.

Do your best to eat like you would if you were at home. Avoid junk food that doesn’t provide you with the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Limit the introduction of new foods that you have never tried before so that your body can have time to get used to it.

Get More Rest

Just because NYC boasts itself as the city that never sleeps, it’s not a good idea for you to adopt the same philosophy. Your body needs at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to function properly. You’ll help boost your immune system to fight germs and bacteria from getting you sick. The city can be a bit noisy at night which can keep you awake if you’re sensitive to noise. Consider investing in earplugs, sleep medication, or a sound machine to help you drown out all the bustling activity.

Practice Proper Hand Washing

Wash your hands frequently using plenty of soap and water, especially after meals and trips to the restroom. Dry off your hands with paper towels or a high-speed Dyson hand dryer to avoid spreading germs back onto your hands. Use hand sanitizer when you don’t have access to soap and water. If you are visiting family members who have small children, you may want to consider washing and sanitizing your hands more often. Approximately 87% of five-year-olds are enrolled in pre-primary programs in the United States. If your nieces, nephews, and cousins are a part of that population, they could be carrying tons of bacteria from school.

Drink More Water

Keeping hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help prevent you from becoming sick. Since our body is made up of mostly water, it’s important to replenish our organs to keep them functioning properly. Carry bottled water with you at all times to help you avoid the risk of developing diarrhea from drinking tap water that carries bacteria you aren’t used to.

Take Supplements

Taking vitamin and mineral supplements can help prevent you from getting sick. Vitamins A, C, and D can boost your immune system. Probiotics can reduce the number of bacteria that can cause illness from wreaking havoc. Adding supplements to a healthy diet rich in fiber will give your stomach the ability to fight off unhealthy bacteria so you can spend more time enjoying your new experiences.

Get Your Flu Shot

According to the CDC, there have been at least 710,000M flu-related hospitalizations since 2010. One of the best ways to avoid getting sick is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Before going to New York City, make an appointment with your doctor for a checkup and to get your flu shot and any other necessary vaccinations.

Protect Your Eyes

To avoid getting sick, do your best to keep your hands away from your face, especially your eyes. This will help prevent germs on any surfaces you touch from entering your body. If you must touch your face for any reason, use facial tissues to provide a barrier.

Avoid Alcohol and Cigarettes

Drinking and smoking can both cause dehydration, which increases your chances of getting sick. Cigarettes can make your cold and flu symptoms last even longer. Alcohol can also prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep, which can weaken your immune system. Eliminating these two activities can help keep you healthier so you can focus on enjoying your stay.

Don’t Forget Your Exercise Routine

Just because you are on vacation doesn’t mean you can skimp on your workouts. Exercise can help prevent respiratory tract infections from developing as well as shortening their duration. Keep your exercise routine the same as if you were home. If you don’t normally exercise, do as much walking around the city as possible while you are on vacation. Not only will you be able to better take in the sights, but you’ll keep yourself healthier as well!

Keep Insurance Documents Handy

If you do need to go to the hospital or urgent care center because you’re sick, you’ll want to keep your health insurance documents handy in a safe place where you won’t lose them. The Gartner Group estimates that around 15% of all paper documents get misplaced and 7.5% of them get lost completely. When you are on vacation, you can easily forget where you put your health insurance cards. Designate a specific place for these documents where you can easily access them if you need them.

Before you travel, it’s a good idea to check with your insurance company about what providers in New York City are covered under your plan. Make a list of contact information for these providers and keep it in your smartphone for easy access. That way, you can seek treatment and shorten the duration of your illness should you get sick during your visit.
