ABERFELDY And Bee Informed Partnership (BIP) Launch 'Gardening Giveback Project' To Encourage Urban Beekeeping

ABERFELDY Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the whisky known around the world as the 'Golden Dram,' recently announced the launch of its 'Gardening Giveback Project' in collaboration with Bee Informed Partnership (BIP), a national, non-profit organization dedicated to working with beekeepers across the country to improve honey bee colony health and increase colony survivorship.

image004.jpg

Over the last decade, 1 in 3 managed honey bee colonies have been lost each year as a result of stressors like pests, pathogens, pesticides and poor nutrition due in part to habitat loss. Although dedicated beekeepers have been able to stabilize the U.S. honey bee population by splitting healthy colonies to make up for the continued losses, mortality rates remain high. In order to keep the U.S. honey bee population stable, it is crucial that everyone does their part in giving back to the bees and the professionals who care for them.

Kicking off just in time for National Honey Bee Day and continuing throughout National Honey Month in September, the Gardening Giveback Project builds upon ABERFELDY's commitment to relieving the plight of honey bees via its Barrels and Bees program – an initiative that supports local beekeepers by partnering with them to feature their honey as the main ingredient in signature cocktails. Famed for its rich honey notes resulting from the patient process of longer fermentation, ABERFELDY's richness can be accentuated in honey-based cocktails, creating a unique connection between the whisky and the precious natural resource.

"So much of ABERFELDY's story is rooted in its honeyed richness, making honey itself a perfect ingredient for many of our cocktails," said Aleco Azqueta, Brand Director Single Malts at BACARDI.  "We created the Barrels and Bees program to help support local beekeepers and protect these tiny creatures who do so much for our environment, especially given recent data showing some of the highest mortality rates on record. We're proud to be able to introduce the Gardening Giveback Project this year, as it provides ABERFELDY with another opportunity to drive awareness for this cause we are so passionate about."

image012.jpg

Through the Gardening Giveback Project, ABERFELDY and BIP are empowering beekeepers and bartenders across eight cities in the United States (Austin, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles, California; New York, New York; San Francisco, California) to plant and maintain community garden-style bee sanctuaries by growing flowers, herbs and vegetables in dual purpose: to foster a healthy environment for bees while also cultivating ingredients that can be used in cocktails. The locally grown ingredients like basil, mint and honey will be used in a brand new, celebratory cocktail dubbed the ABERFELDY "Herbed Honey Smash," which can be purchased and enjoyed from a safe, social distance at various accounts within each city. ABERFELDY has also committed a $10,000 donation to BIP to help support local beekeepers in their research, education and communication efforts to improve honey bee health and sustainability.

"As the single most important pollinator to agriculture, honey bees are a vital component in ensuring we have access to high quality, nutritious fruits, vegetables, and nuts," Says Geoff Williams, President of Bee Informed Partnership. "We definitely appreciate ABERFELDY supporting our mission and are really excited to help bring the Gardening Giveback Project to life."

For consumers who want to support the cause but aren't located in one of the eight regions, ABERFELDY is offering a limited-edition, farmer's market-style cocktail crate on ReserveBar.com that is comprised of the ingredients needed to create the Herbed Honey Smash at home. Customers will receive a bottle of ABERFELDY 12, seeds to plant their own garnishes that can double as forage, honey bear glassware, tasting spoons, a tasting tray and three different flavors of honey harvested by "The Native Guy" Nick Bofill, who maintains hives on top of Bacardi's North American headquarters in Miami and is a participating beekeeper in the project. Additionally, customers who purchase the cocktail crate will be provided with exclusive access to a virtual whisky and honey pairing hosted by BACARDI North American Malts Ambassador Holly Seidewand and Mr. Bofill on Thursday, September 17th. The limited-edition cocktail crate will be available for purchase on ReserveBar.com in time for National Honey Bee Day and lasting throughout National Honey Month this September for $45.

Dom Pérignon To Release New Limited 2010 Vintage

DP-Vintage-2010-Primary-Beautyshot-Square_medium.width-1280x-prop.png

We’ve all had the 1996, but in exciting news from the Champagne world Dom Pérignon is releasing their Vintage 2010 this September. 2010 was a challenging, complex year with extreme weather conditions from a rigorous winter to a very delayed dry spring, however, Dom Pérignon meticulously and with great precision produced a vintage that resulted in a true testament of nature and worthy of a sip. Due to these conditions, the luxury champagne house is only releasing a limited number and is one of few houses to launch a vintage.

As the Dom Pérignon Vintage 2010 was a daunting and bold task, it truly displayed the houses mastery, which is nurtured by experience, passed on and reproduced. The newest vintage has generous aromas of tropical fruit that instantly shines, followed by freshness. The vintage on the palate has a sappy sensation that unfolds generously yet firm and controlled.

Discover The Wines of New York

Jessica N. Todmann

New York heralds a rich and lengthy wine history, and continues to maintain strong relevancy as a wine producing area, coming third in place behind California and Washington state. The country’s first bonded winery was founded here in New York, and the oldest operating winery in America is housed in New York as well.

Now, New York wine country boasts seven official wine regions, along with several additional subregions. There are more than 1600 family vineyards and over 400 wineries throughout New York, with the wine (and grape) industry generating “more than $4.8 billion in economic benefits annually for New York State.”

For those unfamiliar with the history of wine production, that says a lot. Evidence accounts for winemaking in ancient cultures dating back as far as 6,000 B.C. and New York’s community of wine producers continue adding onto this centuries old tradition.

If you’re interested in discovering some of the wines New York has to offer, here are a few New York wineries you should know:

Brotherhood Winery

The Brotherhood Winery was established in 1839, and is America’s oldest winery. Located in Washingtonville, New York, Brotherhood is less than an hour and a half from New York City, and welcomes guests for tours, tastings and live music. If you have a special occasion on the horizon, such as a wedding, birthday party or corporate gathering, the Grand Salon can accommodate. The 19th century space offers a charming setting with a deeply historic backdrop, making it the ideal destination for any memorable event.

One Woman Wines & Vineyards

The name behind Claudia Purita’s Long Island winery is literal. An Italian native, she grew up on her family's farm and has brought the values learned to her vineyards. “Her Story” illustrates a woman who’s attentive to the smallest details, patient and willing to go above and beyond for the sake of quality. Out of that perseverance came an array of wines, with selections for those who favor red, white or pink. While her wines are available for purchase online, One Woman Wines also has a tasting room with nine wines available for tasting and seven reserve wines for purchase.

Red Hook Winery

The Red Hook Winery opened in 2008 and since then, their focus has truly been on bringing New York wines to consumers. They produce all of their wines “from grape to bottle” at their urban winery on Pier 41 and sell a host of options for wine lovers to sip on- like orange wines and unique red and white blends. This winery has received quite a bit of media coverage, and perhaps for good reason. Celine Bossart recounts her visit for Edible Brooklyn: “there’s something that Red Hook Winery brings to the table that’s very different from the others in its class: whereas the typical négociant tends to keep the spotlight in one place (on itself), a sharing-is-caring approach is more their style.” Red Hook Winery is now open for outdoor seating and wine tastings, which you can book in advance on their website. Visit!

Ben Ish Winery

Ben Ish Winery is only one of less than a handful of wineries located in Brooklyn. The company only offers dry red wines that are kosher, and carry Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Old Vine Zinfandel. Currently, all of their wines are out of stock; which makes sense, as the winery has won several wine making competitions in the past. Perfect for those that like to stay indoors, Ben Ish Winery delivers throughout the five boroughs, as well as the Five Towns section of Long Island and Monsey, located in Rockland County, NY. Check out their testimonials page to hear from previous satisfied customers.

Red Wines To Sip On This Summer

We are in a heat wave and it is hott out. While you may be going for your white wine or hard celtzer, the perfect red wine is all you need during these Summer days and nights. Having a bottle chilled goes perfectly by itself or during a late night in the hamptons a red is perfect by the fireplace. Not sure what Red to pick up? We’ve got you covered with our Summer selects below.

“When thinking of reds to enjoy during the summertime, my go-to red is Pinot Noir. Typically Pinot Noir is not as substantial as other red varieties. A good light-bodied Pinot Noir can be very versatile with a numerous amount of summer dishes, such as savory burgers and grilled veggies. I would recommend trying the Landmark Vineyards 2018 Overlook Pinot Noir, as it has a great balance of ripe red fruit on the entry, savory elements on the mid-palate and a clean finish with subtle spice notes. This perfect summer sipper can be enjoyed on it’s own or with dishes such as a Roasted Beet Salad with arugula, goat cheese & pecans or a Filet Mignon with a mushroom cream sauce with friends and family at your table.” Stated by Winemaker Greg Stach Landmark Vineyards

Landmark Vineyards 2018 Overlook Pinot Noir

The 2018 Overlook Pinot Noir represents another splendid blend from some of California’s best cool climate growing regions in Monterey, Santa Barbara and Sonoma Counties. The palate on this red is medium to full bodied with ripe red fruit of strawberry, raspberry and black cherry fruit with balanced spice and earth mixed with leather, dusty tobacco leaf and subtle oak on the mid-palate.

Terrazas de los Andes Reserva Malbec 2018

This seamless rich red wine is hand-harvested between March and April, Terrazas’ signature Reserva Malbec is synonymous with very intense colors, aromas of fresh fruit, flowers, and spices. This vintage is kind, aromatic and fresh. Its precise tannins provide great softness and presence in the mouth.

DiNotte Red Blend

The newest addition to the Mezzacorona portfolio, DiNotte expresses the aromatic richness of two native varieties that thrive on the foothills of the Dolomites mountain range in northern Italy: Teroldego (70%) and Marzemino (15%). A small amount of Merlot (15%) is added. With notes of plum and  blackberry with a hint of cocoa and vanilla, this full-bodied, lushly textured wine makes it the ideal pairing for grilled steak, barbecue ribs and pork chops.

Apothic Red

It is typical for red wines to be served room temperature, however, not many people know that some reds can actually be served chilled, such as Apothic Red . This red is one of the few red wines that actually works great at room temp AND when served chilled, making it the perfect match for an outdoor barbecue to celebrate the holiday! The dark and brooding character pair unexpectedly well with smoky flavors.

Bonterra Organic Vineyards Young Red Canned Wine

After cracking open a can, the nose is met with aromas of red roses, fresh fig, red berries, and orange peel that give way to a refreshing, lively palate of raspberries, watermelon and pomegranate. The higher acidity of the wine light profile of this red wine make it ideally served chilled.

Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to forge Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers combining the structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz. Bin 389 also exemplifies the judicious balance of fruit and oak.

Snoop Cali Red

Full and dense, with strong black & blue fruit notes up front from the Petite Sirah, complemented by bright red, slightly candied fruit in the background from the Zinfandel. The darkly toasted oak ties it all together along with a slightly sweet finish.

The Best Way To Celebrate Prosecco Week Is With A Virtual Tasting

We may still be inside, but that won’t stop us from celebrating some of our favorite holidays. This week from is the third annual National Prosecco Week, held from July 20-26, 2020, is going digital! What’s a better way to host a prosecco tasting to educate yourself on, how to identify authentic Prosecco and the many different ways to enjoy it. Hosted by The Prosecco DOC Consortium we were able to have a virtual tasting ourselves and below are our notes on what to serve, and what to expect.

National+Prosecco+Week.jpg

Hosted by certified Sommelier and Wine Director at Gary’s Wine & Marketplace Brooke Sabel, we were able to try 7 different Prosecco’s ranging from a Brut to Extra Dry we learned everything from taste to terroir, its origins and future - and provide recommendations on hosting, food pairings and serving suggestions to challenge misconceptions and offer inventive ways to enjoy the world’s most popular sparkling wine.

Piera Martellozzo “075 Carati” Prosecco DOC - Brut

Trying the Piera Martellozzo “075 Carati” Prosecco DOC, I thought it was a good starting wine to begin with. With a wave of citrus coming from the glass I would characterize this as semi-sweet with strong notes of grape and apples. Very refreshing with the 90-degree temperature outside.

Villa Sandi “Il Fresco” Prosecco DOC Treviso - Brut

While the 075 Carati tasted of apple, this one smells like an Autumn apple harvest, green specifically. Noted to pair well with spicy food, you’d find some sweet & heat with this pairing. Perfect alone or with a cocktail.

La Gioiosa Prosecco DOC Treviso - Brut

This lighter prosecco shows more of it’s floral notes than the first two, almost with notes of grapefruit, it would pair nice with a seafood pasta dish.

Zonin Prosecco DOC - Brut

Zonin prosecco is where the flavors begin to change with a softer palate that isn’t too sweet. With a feinter smell on the nose, the afternotes are on more of a stone fruit, perfect pairing with a burrata side dish. Very mellow, will be something to try with frozen fruit mixed in.

Val D’Oca Prosecco DOC - Extra Dry

As we enter the extra dry section, my favorite, I note the crisp taste that the other’s didn’t have. The pale yellow prosecco, almost has a greenish hue with hints of citrus and even almond. I can imagine myself pairing this with on the beaches of Sag Harbor with a plate of crab cakes, or even just a lounging drink at home.

Blu Giovello Prosecco DOC - Extra Dry

Something I haven’t seen before was a nice screwtop prosecco, perfect for bringing into the park or the next time at Christopher Street pier. With my first sip, I notice how dry and yet citrusy it truly is. While I try this tasting with cheese, I truly wish I had sushi to accompany the Blu Giovello Prosecco DOC.

La Marca Prosecco DOC - Extra Dry

Last but not least is the La Marca Prosecco, was a great finishing drink. With a Tiffany blue label, I knew it couldn’t go wrong being someone who enjoys wines on the dryer side. This prosecco drew the best from all the other’s with separate notes of apple, citrus, and floral all together. While easy to say it would pair well with seafood or byitself, I can almost find it pairing best with a richer meal like pasta or a chocolate dessert.

Why We're Drinking Lambrusco This Summer

Catherine Doolan

Is there a drink for Summer 2020? Lambrusco! Lambrusco is a well-known wine that is making its way up the popularity list just in time for the summer.

Why We're Drinking Lambrusco This Summer.png

Lambrusco can vary from a dry to sweet wine and is most often semi-sparkling. The red grapes are found in Northern Italy, the Emilia-Romagna region, and it is one of the oldest wines in Italy. The variance of Lambrusco wine makes the wine pairable with many different foods. Lambrusco gets its flavors from multiple berries including blackberries, boysenberries, cherries, strawberries, and raspberries. These fruity flavors make Lambrusco a great drink to sip on this Summer.

Ventuini Baldini organically harvests Lambrusco wines in its winery located in the province of Reggio Emilia. They also harvest Lambrusco varieties like Sorbara, Grasparossa, and Salamino, all branches of Lambrusco made from different types of grapes.

So, next time you’re planning an outdoor meal, try a Lambrusco. It pairs well with cured meats, pizza, grilled meats, and burgers. This wine should be your go-to drink of the summer. Its pairing to almost any food, fruit flavor, and sparkling consistency will keep you happy and satisfied during a hot day.
