Inside the Callen-Lorde Community Health Awards: A Celebration of Courage and Community
Manhattan’s Pier Sixty came alive on November 7th as the 24th annual Callen-Lorde Community Health Awards brought together 650 guests for a night of celebration and purpose. Raising over $800,000 for LGBTQ+ healthcare, the gala honored the vital work of Callen-Lorde, a global leader in providing judgment-free care regardless of the ability to pay. Hosted by comedian Murray Hill, the evening combined heartfelt tributes, dazzling performances, and a commitment to progress.
Honors were bestowed upon actor and advocate Maulik Pancholy, patient advocate Chriss Christoff Smith, and Steve Madden’s SM Pride group for their contributions to the LGBTQ+ community. Pancholy, introduced by actor Michael Cyril Creighton, delivered an emotional speech emphasizing the importance of celebration in difficult times, saying, “In this darkness, we have to keep shining bright.” Smith reflected on his personal journey as a transman, calling authenticity “a daily act of freedom.” Steve Madden CEO Edward R. Rosenfeld praised the SM Pride team for their advocacy and dedication to creating an inclusive workplace.
The program was anchored by a fiery address from Callen-Lorde CEO Patrick McGovern, who declared, “Our care is a lifeline, especially when majorities threaten our rights and identities.” Comedian Dana Goldberg kept the crowd entertained with a lively performance, and DJ Amber Martin brought the night to a festive close with an afterparty dance floor.
Among the evening’s luminaries were U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler, actors Kaitlin Becker and Timothy Hughes, and Agenda PAC CEO Brian Sims, alongside LGBTQ+ activists and allies. The event committee, led by co-chairs James T. Evans, Andrew Gallagher, and Faiz Osman, ensured the gala’s success, reminding everyone of the resilience and beauty of a community united.
