Ahhh coffee… Where do I even begin with describing my all-time favorite beverage? Well, first of all, it wakes me up in the morning, and second of all, an iced caramel latte tastes incredible. So why not combine my favorite drink and my favorite place into one fabulous article? Everyone, I am proud to present the top five coffee shops where New Yorkers can get your “Central Perk” on! 

Grounded

Tucked in a very homey and cozy spot in the West Village, “Grounded” is the coffee place that will make you feel welcome. It is a relaxing place for you to get your work done, catch up with your loved ones, read a book, or just simply get a cup of coffee. If you are in the lighter food or drink mood, they also have smoothies and sandwiches. So the next time you are in the West Village, be sure to stop by “Grounded.”

Third Rail Coffee

This rustic coffee shop is an NYU student go-to spot for studying, chatting, dates, a hangout spot before catching a movie at the IFC Center, and of course, for coffee. From their classic coffee drinks like cappuccinos, lattes, and macchiatos, to their scrumptious baked goods like scones, “Third Rail Coffee” has everything that your cafe heart desires! Their coffee drinks are made with sweet Battenkill Dairy Farm milk so you know you are getting the best local ingredients served into your cup of coffee.

Coffee Project NY

This project started in none other than the East Village. They also have locations in both Queens and Brooklyn. If coffee is streaming in your blood veins like it is in mine, then this is the perfect place for you! From their nitro flights to their “deconstructed latte” (an espresso shot with a cup of milk served with a latte and a waffle cookie), “Coffee Project NY” is every coffee lover’s dream in one store.

Everyman Espresso

Located at Park Slope and 5th Avenue, “Everyman Espresso” has high-quality coffee that will wake you right up. Yes, they have your typical Starbucks and Dunkin coffee drink options, but they also have their very own unique options as well. One of their most well-known drinks is their “Panacea” which is espresso with lemon and honey ginger bitters.

Sawada Coffee

This place is very popular for their latte art. This example above is just one of the many incredible designs that you can get on your drink. The vibe in this coffee shop has a “skater aesthetic” serving artistic homemade drinks founded by owner Hiroshi Sawada. They also serve matcha based drinks so if you’re not a huge fan of coffee don’t worry!

We’ve all had the 1996, but in exciting news from the Champagne world Dom Pérignon is releasing their Vintage 2010 this September. 2010 was a challenging, complex year with extreme weather conditions from a rigorous winter to a very delayed dry spring, however, Dom Pérignon meticulously and with great precision produced a vintage that resulted in a true testament of nature and worthy of a sip. Due to these conditions, the luxury champagne house is only releasing a limited number and is one of few houses to launch a vintage.

As the Dom Pérignon Vintage 2010 was a daunting and bold task, it truly displayed the houses mastery, which is nurtured by experience, passed on and reproduced. The newest vintage has generous aromas of tropical fruit that instantly shines, followed by freshness. Discover The Wines of New York

New York heralds a rich and lengthy wine history, and continues to maintain strong relevancy as a wine producing area, coming third in place behind California and Washington state. The country’s first bonded winery was founded here in New York, and the oldest operating winery in America is housed in New York as well.

Now, New York wine country boasts seven official wine regions, along with several additional subregions. There are more than 1600 family vineyards and over 400 wineries throughout New York, with the wine (and grape) industry generating “more than $4.8 billion in economic benefits annually for New York State.” 

For those unfamiliar with the history of wine production, that says a lot. Evidence accounts for winemaking in ancient cultures dating back as far as 6,000 B.C. and New York’s community of wine producers continue adding onto this centuries old tradition.

If you’re interested in discovering some of the wines New York has to offer, here are a few New York wineries you should know:

Brotherhood Winery

The Brotherhood Winery was established in 1839, and is America’s oldest winery. Located in Washingtonville, New York, Brotherhood is less than an hour and a half from New York City, and welcomes guests for tours, tastings and live music. If you have a special occasion on the horizon, such as a wedding, birthday party or corporate gathering, the Grand Salon can accommodate. The 19th century space offers a charming setting with a deeply historic backdrop, making it the ideal destination for any memorable event. 

One Woman Wines & Vineyards

The name behind Claudia Purita’s Long Island winery is literal. An Italian native, she grew up on her family's farm and has brought the values learned to her vineyards. “Her Story” illustrates a woman who’s attentive to the smallest details, patient and willing to go above and beyond for the sake of quality. Out of that perseverance came an array of wines, with selections for those who favor red, white or pink. While her wines are available for purchase online, One Woman Wines also has a tasting room with nine wines available for tasting and seven reserve wines for purchase. 

Red Hook Winery

The Red Hook Winery opened in 2008 and since then, their focus has truly been on bringing New York wines to consumers. They produce all of their wines “from grape to bottle” at their urban winery on Pier 41 and sell a host of options for wine lovers to sip on- like orange wines and unique red and white blends. This winery has received quite a bit of media coverage, and perhaps for good reason. Celine Bossart recounts her visit for Edible Brooklyn: “there’s something that Red Hook Winery brings to the table that’s very different from the others in its class: whereas the typical négociant tends to keep the spotlight in one place (on itself), a sharing-is-caring approach is more their style.” Red Hook Winery is now open for outdoor seating and wine tastings, which you can book in advance on their website. Ben Ish Winery 

Ben Ish Winery is only one of less than a handful of wineries located in Brooklyn. The company only offers dry red wines that are kosher, and carry Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Old Vine Zinfandel. Currently, all of their wines are out of stock; which makes sense, as the winery has won several wine making competitions in the past. Perfect for those that like to stay indoors, Ben Ish Winery delivers throughout the five boroughs, as well as the Five Towns section of Long Island and Monsey, located in Rockland County, NY. Farmers markets are a summertime staple especially in the Hamptons! Farmers markets are a great way to incorporate fresh produce into your summertime cooking favorites. From fruits and vegetables to baked goods, farmers markets have everything you need. Here are a few markets that are open in the Hamptons.

Westhampton Beach Farmers Market - Westhampton Beach, NY

The Westhampton Beach farmers market is located on the Village Green in the center of town. The market has over 50 vendors including vendors of fruit, breads & pies, local wine, and many more. The market is open every Saturday from 9-1 pm. Face masks required.

Amber Waves - Amagansett, NY

Craft cocktail specialist Shigefumi Kabashima has reopened both of his Japanese cocktail bars and full-service restaurants, ROKC (Ramen + Oyster + Kitchen + Cocktails) in West Harlem and NR in the Upper East Side. NR’s latest brunch menu is now available on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 pm and it features a wide range of contemporary Japanese dishes and your favorite brunch classics such as Chef Takashi’s handmade Soba Noodles and Truffle Egg Sandwiches. These restaurants were closed during the hype of the pandemic, ROKC and NR are now in their newest chapter. Their dining is complete with outdoor tables and chairs as well as a new chef and menu for their food, this was all planned out while executing the creative and delicious cocktails Shige is known for.

The rain has become every restaurant’s worst nightmare. Fortunately, a Mediterranean restaurant located in the West Village called “Extra Virgin” has got our back! This restaurant offers its guests both umbrellas and an awning for their outdoor seating options. Michele Gaton is the owner and she is also the General Manager of Union Square’s Coffee Shop. Her Partner in Crime and Executive Chef Joey Fortunato is also known for his work at Manhattan Ocean Club, Layla, Picholine, and Tribeca Grill. The menu also allows guests to use their phones to scan a QR code for ordering food and drinks. Some of “Extra Virgin” most well-known dishes include:

  • Chopped Summer Salad with Watermelon and Feta with crisp romaine lettuce, baby arugula, sweet corn, grape tomato, red onion, radish, cucumber, and roasted chickpeas, dressed with a honey-lime vinaigrette.

  • The Truffled Mushroom Asparagus Turkey Burger, which is dressed with a porcini aioli and served with fries or a salad.

  • Spicy Shrimp Tacos with a chile-lime aioli, pineapple salsa, avocado, jicama slaw, pico de gallo, and pickled jalapeño.

  • The Mushroom Crusted Virgin Chicken, which has been on the menu since the restaurant's inception and made with a juicy chicken breast coated in a mixture of different mushrooms, served with sweet pea risotto, cipollini onions, and truffle broth.

NR’s latest brunch menu is now available on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 pm and it features a wide range of contemporary Japanese dishes and your favorite brunch classics such as Chef Takashi’s handmade Soba Noodles and Truffle Egg Sandwiches. These restaurants were closed during the hype of the pandemic, ROKC and NR are now in their newest chapter. Their dining is complete with outdoor tables and chairs as well as a new chef and menu for their food, this was all planned out while executing the creative and delicious cocktails Shige is known for.

The rain has become every restaurant’s worst nightmare. Fortunately, a Mediterranean restaurant located in the West Village called “Extra Virgin” has got our back! This restaurant offers its guests both umbrellas and an awning for their outdoor seating options. Michele Gaton is the owner and she is also the General Manager of Union Square’s Coffee Shop. Her Partner in Crime and Executive Chef Joey Fortunato is also known for his work at Manhattan Ocean Club, Layla, Picholine, and Tribeca Grill. The menu also allows guests to use their phones to scan a QR code for ordering food and drinks. Some of “Extra Virgin” most well-known dishes include:

  • Chopped Summer Salad with Watermelon and Feta with crisp romaine lettuce, baby arugula, sweet corn, grape tomato, red onion, radish, cucumber, and roasted chickpeas, dressed with a honey-lime vinaigrette.

  • The Truffled Mushroom Asparagus Turkey Burger, which is dressed with a porcini aioli and served with fries or a salad.

  • Spicy Shrimp Tacos with a chile-lime aioli, pineapple salsa, avocado, jicama slaw, pico de gallo, and pickled jalapeño.

  • The Mushroom Crusted Virgin Chicken, which has been on the menu since the restaurant's inception and made with a juicy chicken breast coated in a mixture of different mushrooms, served with sweet pea risotto, cipollini onions, and truffle broth.

The Best Way To Celebrate Prosecco Week Is With A Virtual Tasting

We may still be inside, but that won’t stop us from celebrating some of our favorite holidays. This week from is the third annual National Prosecco Week, held from July 20-26, 2020, is going digital! What’s a better way to host a prosecco tasting to educate yourself on, how to identify authentic Prosecco and the many different ways to enjoy it. Hosted by The Prosecco DOC Consortium we were able to have a virtual tasting ourselves and below are our notes on what to serve, and what to expect.

Hosted by certified Sommelier and Wine Director at Gary’s Wine & Marketplace Brooke Sabel, we were able to try 7 different Prosecco’s ranging from a Brut to Extra Dry we learned everything from taste to terroir, its origins and future - and provide recommendations on hosting, food pairings and serving suggestions to challenge misconceptions and offer inventive ways to enjoy the world’s most popular sparkling wine. 

Piera Martellozzo “075 Carati” Prosecco DOC - Brut

Trying the Piera Martellozzo “075 Carati” Prosecco DOC, I thought it was a good starting wine to begin with. With a wave of citrus coming from the glass I would characterize this as semi-sweet with strong notes of grape and apples. Very refreshing with the 90-degree temperature outside.

Villa Sandi “Il Fresco” Prosecco DOC Treviso - Brut

While the 075 Carati tasted of apple, this one smells like an Autumn apple harvest, green specifically. Noted to pair well with spicy food, you’d find some sweet & heat with this pairing. Perfect alone or with a cocktail.

La Gioiosa Prosecco DOC Treviso - Brut

This lighter prosecco shows more of it’s floral notes than the first two, almost with notes of grapefruit, it would pair nice with a seafood pasta dish.

Zonin Prosecco DOC - Brut

Zonin prosecco is where the flavors begin to change with a softer palate that isn’t too sweet. With a feinter smell on the nose, the afternotes are on more of a stone fruit, perfect pairing with a burrata side dish. Very mellow, will be something to try with frozen fruit mixed in.

Val D’Oca Prosecco DOC - Extra Dry

As we enter the extra dry section, my favorite, I note the crisp taste that the other’s didn’t have. The pale yellow prosecco, almost has a greenish hue with hints of citrus and even almond. I can imagine myself pairing this with on the beaches of Sag Harbor with a plate of crab cakes, or even just a lounging drink at home.

Blu Giovello Prosecco DOC - Extra Dry

Something I haven’t seen before was a nice screwtop prosecco, perfect for bringing into the park or the next time at Christopher Street pier. With my first sip, I notice how dry and yet citrusy it truly is. While I try this tasting with cheese, I truly wish I had sushi to accompany the Blu Giovello Prosecco DOC.

La Marca Prosecco DOC - Extra Dry

Last but not least is the La Marca Prosecco, was a great finishing drink. With a Tiffany blue label, I knew it couldn’t go wrong being someone who enjoys wines on the dryer side. This prosecco drew the best from all the other’s with separate notes of apple, citrus, and floral all together. While easy to say it would pair well with seafood or byitself, I can almost find it pairing best with a richer meal like pasta or a chocolate dessert.

Easy Whiskey Cocktails For National Scotch Day

July 27th National Scotch Day. While most often thought to be something to sip neat or on the rocks, we recommend the Double Cask 15 Years Old and Double Cask 18 Years Old. Scotch, can also be a great addition to a number of different cocktails.

Wether your a master bartender or curious to try something new, here are a few easy whiskey cocktails to celebrate during National Scotch Day.

Glenfiddich Monte Carlo by Allan Roth, Glenfiddich Brand Ambassador

  • 2 parts Glenfiddich 14 Year Bourbon Barrel Reserve

  • ½ part Benedectine

  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters

  • Orange twist, to garnish

In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients except the orange twist.  Stir over ice.  Strain into a double rocks glass over ice.  Express the orange twist over the drink and drop in. 

Lemonade Stand

  • 1.5oz Bruichladdich Classic Laddie

  •   .75oz Fresh lemon juice

  •   .5oz Earl Grey syrup

  •   Top with Tamarind soda (recommend Jarritos)

  •   Garnish: Lemon wheel

  •   Glass: Collins

Add first three ingredients to tin, shake, then strain over fresh ice into a tall glass. Top with tamarind soda and stir to incorporate.

Earl Grey syrup: Make a strong tea by using three tea bags in one cup of hot water. Steep for six minutes then remove tea bags. Add one cup of sugar to hot tea and stir until sugar is dissolved.

  • 1 ½ parts Monkey Shoulder

  • ¾ parts Sweet Vermouth

  • ¼ part Maraschino Liqueur

  • 2 Dashes Chocolate Bitters

  • Garnish with Orange Twist

Combine ingredients, stir, and strain into a coupe glass-up, fashioned glass


The Macallan Speyside Sipper

  • 1 ½ oz The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old

  • ½ oz Membrillo

  • ¼ Lime

  • 3 oz Sprite’s Delight Tea

  • 1 grapefruit

Dissolve ½ oz Membrillo into Sprite’s Delight Tea. Add 1 oz Fresh grapefruit and .25 oz lime. Serve tallover ice in a highball glass. Garnish with membrillo slice 


The Golden Dram

  • 2 oz Aberfeldy 12 Single Malt Scotch whisky

  • 2 barspoons (0.5oz) of local honey syrup*

  • Honey Syrup: 100g of honey and 64g water, stir and leave to chill. Note: syrup will only last 3 days

  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 2 dashes orange bitters

Add the honey syrup, bitters and Aberfeldy 12 to a mixing glass, then add ice and stir to dilute (~30 seconds). Pour into rocks glass and add block ice, then garnish with an orange twist expressing the oils over the drink.

One of the many attractions the Hamptons have to offer is wineries.  If you are looking to spend a day outside while tasting some fantastic wines and learning about how they are made, a trip to a winery might be for you!

Wölffer Estate Vineyard - Sagaponack, NY

Wölffer Estate Vineyard’s Tasting Room and Wine Stand are open weather permitting and with reservations only. The Tasting Room offers seatings for wine tasting as well as small bites. Wölffer makes reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines along with ciders.

Channing Daughters Winery - Bridgehampton, NY

Channing Daughters Winery is located in Bridgehampton and many are a part of its wine club. New York City’s Phase Two of Reopening: Will Outdoor Dining Succeed?

As of Monday, June 22nd, New York City has moved onto phase two of reopening their city due to the decrease in coronavirus cases and deaths. Phase two includes hair salons, barbershops, retail shops, offices, real estate locations, places of worship, car stores, and outdoor seating at restaurants open for business. At least 300,000 New Yorkers are now back at work. Social distancing and CDC health guidelines will, of course, be in place as many of these places reopen. The state of New York is reopening by region and since New York City had the most amount of coronavirus cases and deaths, they were the last region in New York to enter into phase two. Now the question remaining is, will New York City successfully move onto phase three or move back to phase one?                             

Outdoor seating for these various restaurants will be allowed on sidewalks, lanes, and plazas. If customers do not follow the social distancing and CDC health guidelines while they are eating outside, then they will not be allowed to eat. These guidelines are crucial because outdoor seating reopening will help at least 5,000 New York City restaurants and it will also save at least 45,000 jobs in the restaurant industry. All restaurant staff members must wear face masks at all times, tables must be six feet apart from each other, customers must wear face masks until seated, and no more than ten people are allowed to be seated at one table. Not only will customers not be allowed to eat at the restaurant if they do not follow the guidelines, but the restaurant itself may be closed if they do not follow the guidelines either. One of the many fabulous New York City restaurants that will be open for outdoor dining is “Bubby’s Tribeca.” It is located at 120 Hudson St., and they will be allowing customers to dine outside on their picturesque terrace. There is also “Bubby’s High Line” which is located at 73 Gansevoort St., it will be open for both takeout and outdoor dining. Curbside pickup and delivery for any food and alcohol items on the menu will also be available from both High Line and Tribeca locations. Bubby’s is just one of the many examples of restaurants that are getting back up on their feet again during phase two. Overall, restaurants rely on customers coming and trying their food over and over again. Without those customers returning to that specific restaurant, it will fail. The coronavirus pandemic is the ultimate test for restaurants not just in New York City but all over the world. Restaurants now need your love and support more than ever. If you love a certain restaurant and you don’t want it to close yet you are not ready to physically eat there yet, then take out as often as you can! Get your favorite pizza, chicken, salad, pasta, or whatever other signature dishes that you love so you can keep ordering it post coronavirus and beyond. Save the restaurants you love. Keep New York City moving forward to phase three instead of back to phase one by following all of the social distancing and CDC health guidelines. Wear face masks when necessary. Help restaurants thrive not die. This pandemic will not last forever,
