Food & Wine Pairings To Try This Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the time of the year where you surround yourselves with the ones you love. This Thanksgiving, why not surround yourselves with the ones you love and a bottle of these wines to share with the table? Not sure what to drink or how to pair it with? Don’t worry we’ve got you covered with a food and wine guide is guaranteed to make your guests think you’re secretly a sommelier.

SB-Thanksgiving-11.jpg

For Roasted Turkey | Rioja Reserva (2014 Burgo Viejo Rioja Reserva)

Unlike so many other meats, Turkey does not traditionally dominate a plate of food flavor-wise and has a lower fat content. With this in mind, the wine pairing should ideally be either a full bodied white wine or a medium bodied red, with low to medium tannin and relatively high acidity, such as a Rioja Reserva.

For Honey Glazed Ham | Spanish Chardonnay (Enate Chardonnay 234)

Ham, with its sweet-and-salty richness, pairs best with wines that have a touch of sweetness, nice acidity and bold fruit. This Chardonnay has complex and intense varietal aromas reveal green apple, ripe peach, fennel and exotic fruit (guava and passion fruit) against a subtle mineral background. Full and unctuous on the palate yet clean and fresh due to lively acidity. A lightly honeyed finish leaves a lingering impression.

To Go With Cranberyy Sauce Cellier des Dauphins 2019 Cotes Du Rhone Reserve Rosé (SRP: $10.99; purchase here)

This French Rhône Valley Rosé offers indulgent notes on the palate of red berry fruit, redcurrants and fresh floral notes that linger on the finish. Enjoy this wine as an aperitif or with salads containing fruits and green veggies.

To Pair With A FIlet Mignon Bonterra Organic Vineyards The Butler 2014 $50

A Syrah blend with hints of Mourvedre, Grenache and Zinfandel, The Butler 2014 exudes aromas of ripe plum and dark cherries with a hint of violets. It is a rich, velvety wine with good structure, well-integrated tannins and flavors of sweet oak and licorice spice.

INTRINSIC Red Blend ($25/ bottle) w/ Chewy Dark Chocolate Peppermint Cookies

A strong flavor like peppermint can easily be overwhelmed unless the wine also has a similar taste like Intrinsic Red Blend. For a good pairing, a minty cookie with a full-bodied red blend like this wine will create an equal balance of spice, sweet, and savory. Red wines can be a tricky match with chocolate and it truly depends on the wine. INTRINSIC red blend is a good match with its herbal mint flavors, to balance out these decadent dark chocolate mint cookies.

Erath Oregon Pinot Noir ($19/bottle) Noir w/ Linzer cookies

A light to medium bodied pinot noir like Erath takes on red fruit flavors of the jam-based cookie such as raspberry, cranberry, or even strawberry. The sweet, vanilla tones that come from the oak barrels will complement the not-so-sweet cookie base from the tart fruit filling creating a perfect balance between tart and sweet.

Peyrassol La Croix des Templiers Rosé 2019

a Provencal rosé with notes of gooseberry and a whisper of refreshing acidity. Although behind its cheery pink colour, lies a darker history.

qbY6ayemRo-m2DrByzOjhQ_pb_x600.png

The estate Commanderie de Peyrassol was formerly owned by the Knights of Templar, an order believed to conspiracy theorists as pulling the strings of the world since the 1100s. They originally formed to protect religious pilgrims going to the Holy Land, inventing the idea of a military monk and are known for spooky practices like worshipping a severed head. The first recorded harvest at Peyrassol took place in 1256.

In 1307, on Friday the 13th of September, hundreds of Knights were thrown in jail in France for alleged heresy - leaving their lands, including the Commanderie de Peyrassol vineyard, abandoned until the Order of the Knights of Malta (an equally secretive and esoteric group) inherited their assets. The vines of the Commanderie de Peyrassol were cultivated by this group until being passed on to a local family in 1790, who started making the wine still produced there today (now owned by Philippe Austruy since 2001) and still bearing the Knights of Templar’s red cross on the label.

SOxcHfrO.png

The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc Dry Stack Vineyard is blended with 4% Sémillon in the style of a Bordeaux Blanc and has extraordinary appeal this year. It opens with classic notes of gunflint and smoke that flesh out to a peachy core accented by notes of beeswax, lychee, floral perfume and ripe citrus. The palate is dynamic, medium-bodied and textured but bursting with ripe, mineral-laced fruits, buzzing with bright acidity and finishing long and addicting. I find it hard to resist drinking this immediately, although it could age well in bottle.

There's a freedom in darkness, it draws our curiosity and piques the senses.  Apothic Dark blends bold dark blueberry and blackberry with opulent notes of coffee and dark chocolate with a rich, smooth finish.

idmxk6cD.png

Inspired to design a brand that reflected Gia’s creative personality, she collaborated with Francis and the winemakers to present a new style of wine—one that’s light and unpretentious. Gia Orange Riesling is unfiltered, and rich in flavors of fruit and spice to warm you up on a chilly fall evening.

GnarlyHead_AuthBlack_RenBottleShot.png

A line of bold and rebellious wines who recently introduced a new label that features perfectly spooky black and orange coloring. Boasting gnarled vines, Gnarly Head wines are perfect to enjoy whether watching scary movies or waiting for trick or treaters.

Perhaps the spookiest of the wines is Gnarly Heads’ Authentic Black. True to its name, Authentic Black opens with brooding aromas of black cherry, black licorice and vanilla providing a powerful entrée to this big, robust Petite Sirah-based blend. Dark and inky in the glass, concentrated flavors of boysenberry and dark chocolate are framed by hints of baking spice on the finish.

kvdul6qjbf9vpzhmahsx.jpg

The 2018 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon’s nose opens on an array of refined ripe black fruit aromas, joined on airing by light toasted hazelnut notes. This red is vinified in the Bordeaux manner, favoring extraction of the fruit and a supple, well-balanced tannic structure.

bonterra_equinox_red_9071951f-1ded-45f5-825b-b2e67be7beea_2048x.jpg

The Equinox Red Blend wine not only makes a great drink but the bottle doubles as a great decoration for your counter or table this Halloween. The bottle the wine comes in is as black as an eclipse, while the wine is a rich red. If you have some cool skull glasses, serve your wine with those to add an extra Halloween element to your day.

blindfold-white-2016-the-prisoner-wine-company_180x.jpg

Sometimes you just need a white wine to drink. If you’re a fan of the classic butterscotch, then this is the wine for you. Blindfold 2016 has a butterscotch and citrus flavor to it. It is also a blend of several different white wines from Chardonnay to Muscat. Enjoy a glass of Blindfold 2016 wine featured after a classic Halloween candy.

Sterling sipped Sterling Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon while talking about his two nominations, how this year will be different, and what he’ll miss most about TV’s biggest night.

When Sterling was asked how this year is going to be different. Sterling stated “Specifically regarding the Emmys, I would say the party of the Emmys doesn’t really start until after the show is over. Everybody is being very polite and respectful, not a lot of drinking going on. But with everybody being at home, with their own bottles of Sterling wine, I feel like people will be enjoying themselves more than usual throughout the actual course of the show.”

New York City Restaurant's We're Happy Reopened

While New York City Restaurants still have not opened inside, plenty have been opened and prospering with outdoor seating or takeout. We’ve compiled a list of our favorites that you have to try out this week. Eat up!

Kyma

One of NYC’s favorite Greek restaurants, opened back up located in Flatiron (15 W 18th St), Kyma will be open Tuesday through Saturday, with ample outdoor seating as well as a DJ Friday and Saturday nights playing a mix of Greek tunes and pop. So while we may not be able to travel to the Greek Islands this summer, at least we can feel transported there for a few hours! Just in time for the harvest in Provence, Kyma has created an outdoor dining patio in partnership with Chateau D’esclans’ Whispering Angel  that allows guests to feel like they have been transported to their favorite European getaway. The patio embraces the vibe of the South of France, utilizing vines not only to help create safe social distancing setups, but to symbolize the grapes and wine making process, while incorporating the regions signature blue hydrangea. Twinkle lights, leafy palms, lavender, and various bottles of Whispering Angel were incorporated into the installation to add to the whimsical romance of the setup.

The elevated Greek comfort food that Kyma patrons have come to love will be included on an updated menu including Kyma Chips (crispy slices of zucchini and eggplant with tzatziki), Tomato Salad (Kyma’s classic Greek salad), Grilled Octopus (with roasted peppers, onions and capers), Lamb Chops and Branzino.
