Best Trends from Fall 2020 NYFW
Even for those who don’t normally follow the latest trends and fads, New York Fashion Week is always worth exploring, as it keeps providing us with the most innovative and unique runways, while instantly setting the fashion trends for the upcoming season. If you want to get a better idea of the outfits we’ll be seeing everywhere in a matter of weeks, here are some of the best and most popular trends from fall 2020 NYFW:
An abundance of color
Although black, brown and muted neutrals tend to dominate during fall and winter, brighter shades are seemingly a notable trend this season. While designers at Marc Jacobs and Carolina Herrera stood out with their bold and vibrant monochromatic looks, vivid shades were scattered throughout the entire Fashion Week. From delicate powder blue and cerulean hues to brighter canary and cherry shades, NYFW undoubtedly set the trend for beautiful colors we’ll be seeing everywhere this fall.
Leather as the modern staple
Instead of the classic biker jacket look, this season saw a myriad of leather items used in more creative ways, both on the runways and street style outfits. Although the looks ranged from leather trousers to dresses and two-piece sets, one of the most popular looks, and coincidentally the easiest one to pull off, were chic leather trench coats. Mostly in the shades of cream, tan and light brown, long leather trenches were paired with casual jeans and statement boots, for a more wearable, everyday outfit.
Sneakers galore
If there’s one thing that never goes out of style, it’s a pair of classic sneakers, and they went for a walk on this season’s runways as well. However, instead of a very clear trend, the sneakers on NYFW ranged from very dainty, basic pairs to bolder, chunkier and more colorful options. It seems like the aim is to simply pair any look you wear with sneakers this season, as long it’s a great choice for you. The reinvented punk
The uptown class combined with a downtown edginess at designers like Monse and R13 made for an interesting, unique and modern take on the classic punk style, a look we’ll undoubtedly be seeing everywhere this fall. From fishnets and safety pins to chunky boots, and even bold plaids paired with feminine florals, NYFW revived the punk era, only this time combined it with a more experimental, modern chic look.
Dramatic capes
Even though the expected outerwear options, such as blazers and trenches, had their moment on the runways, this year brought back an almost forgotten silhouette – the classic cape. Whether they were sleek and elegant at Longchamp or oversized at Proenza Schouler, capes undeniably made for a dramatic, statement-making look this season. To try out the staple cape look this fall, opt for a bigger, flowier cut, while keeping the rest of the outfit clean and simple, for the most impactful look.
Equestrian couture
Whether it’s empowering like at Michael Kors, or elegant and refined like at The Row, exquisite tailoring is always a high fashion staple, and this season is no different. But instead of the classic heel look, designers took a cue from traditional equestrian gear this fall, and paired gorgeous tailored suits with knee-high riding boots, making it the most prominent look on the runway. If you’re not into the equestrian style, however, you can always try out the look with knee-high boots combined with shorts or a skirt, and a perfectly tailored blazer.
From subtle pops of color in classically chic outfits to bolder and edgier choices reserved for the brave, NYFW gave us a wide variety of fashion inspiration for the upcoming season, all interesting and unique in their own way.
