The Macallan has released Distil Your World Mexico, an exceptional single malt whisky and documentary film which captures a sensorial journey through one of the country’s most vibrant celebrations – the Day of the Dead festival.
Distil Your World Mexico marks the latest release in the series of limited edition single malt whiskies and gastronomic creations exploring leading locations around the globe. Crafted by The Macallan Whisky Maker Diane Stuart in collaboration with the Roca brothers, owners of El Celler de Can Roca, twice named Best Restaurant in the World, Distil Your World Mexico reflects the energy, color, spirit and traditions at the heart of this joyful celebration.
To uncover the mastery behind Mexico’s dynamic celebration of life, Diane and Joan Roca traveled to Mexico City to spend time with the people who encapsulate the traditions, craftsmanship and artistic nature of the dynamic Day of the Dead festival. Among those they met are globally acclaimed chef and baker Elena Reygadas, curator Josefina Garcia, who is director of collections at Dolores Olmedo Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and farmer Luiz Perez, who cultivates the marigold flowers which play a central role in the Day of the Dead festival. Their journey and experiences with the remarkable figures they encountered will be showcased in a new 30-minute documentary film.
Matured in a combination of meticulously selected American and European oak casks, Distil Your World Mexico is an exceptional limited-edition single malt whisky which defines the character and spirit of this vibrant tradition and pays homage to the spectacle of Mexico. Displaying a 100% natural color of vibrant marigold, it delivers captivating notes of sugared pan de muerto bread, creamy vanilla and sweet pineapple.
The Macallan Whisky Maker Diane Stuart said: “Mexico is full of passion and energy, and you can feel it from the moment you arrive. On the Day of the Dead that escalates to create the most amazing atmosphere of excitement and celebration. This passion and energy is what we try to capture in Distil Your World Mexico and was a fantastic opportunity to explore The Macallan’s inventory to find just the right flavors to reflect Mexico.
“As whisky makers, we put a lot of heart into what we do, in the same way that Mexicans prepare for this celebration of life.”
The globally acclaimed Roca brothers also created a complex and daring menu that immerses diners in the Day of the Dead festival. Their creations, which like the whisky, took inspiration from the celebrations vibrant colors, shapes, characters, cultural traditions and dishes which form part of Mexico’s inimitable cuisine.
Joan Roca said: “This is a big celebration of the joy of being alive. You can smell it, see it in the colors, and in the food they are preparing. It is a unique opportunity to grasp the soul of a country and try to distill it into a gastronomic experience. This is our humble approach to something that is absolutely huge, because like always, food brings people together.”
The Macallan Distil Your World Mexico is housed in a striking white presentation box, the inside of which features a marigold design embracing the bottle. The vibrant pink lining of the presentation box and touches of pink on the bottle are also inspired by the Day of the Dead as pink symbolizes joy and the celebration of life.
