Interiors Trend: Is Fashion Week’s Glossy, Metallic 2000s Trend Making Its Way Into New Kitchens?
With NYC Fashion Week all wrapped up, we've identified one crossover trend that’s been picking up steam across new kitchen interiors: metallics and gloss. A hallmark of the early 2000s, this futuristic aesthetic is having a major comeback (along with everything else from the early aughts) in not only fashion, but other realms of design.
Ideal for a sleek look, we’re seeing metallic and glossy finishes in new development kitchens that have said goodbye to traditional wood and hello to a more streamlined, clean vibe that hearkens back to the bold, future-forward looks of the millennium. See below the most fashionable kitchens in town.
53 West 53
With architecture by Pritzker Prize-winner Jean Nouvel and interiors by the legendary Thierry Despont, 53 West 53 is the striking 82-story residential tower rising 1,050 feet above the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan against the cinematic backdrop of Central Park and the surrounding cityscape. It features 145 one- to four-bedroom residences including full-floor homes and duplex penthouses with private elevators, as well as 17 studio and one-bedroom suites.
Each home at 53 West 53 features a sleek custom kitchen by Thierry Despont for Molteni, where polished statuary marble countertops and a back-lit statuary backsplash complement back-painted glass cabinetry with polished nickel detailing and Dornbracht fixtures. The extensive suite of modern appliances by Miele and Sub-Zero includes a fully integrated refrigerator and freezer, five-burner cooktop with a fully vented hood, integrated dishwasher, wall oven, steam oven, speed oven, under-counter wine refrigerator, and integrated coffee maker. Given the unique floorplan of each home created by the building's dynamic exterior architecture, kitchens in select residences have dramatic center islands, built-in banquette seating or galley-style layouts, and many feature floor-to-ceiling windows with views above Midtown and beyond. Kitchens are separated from other areas of the home with a pair of pocket doors, offering optimal flexibility and seamless entertaining.

200 East 59th Street
200 East 59th Street is a high-design residential tower that pushes the boundaries of classic modernism. Each residence features floor-to-ceiling glass windows and soaring high ceilings that tie the inside/out living concept together. The kitchen, inspired by its predecessor 432 Park Avenue, is outfitted with Italian white glass cabinetry with an aluminum trim by Aran Cuchine, bookmatched honed Calacatta marble slab countertops, a natural white oak island and full-height backsplashes, with integrated Brilliant White glass appliances by Miele. The space is white and bright and intentionally blends into the wall, giving way to the amazing views surrounding each apartment. As background, 200 East 59th Street is one of the most elegant towers in its prime location at the intersection of Midtown East and the Upper East Side. It is designed by CetraRuddy, and features an amenities level with a double-height lounge, marble fireplace, furnished and landscaped terrace, fitness center and a private dining room with a catering kitchen for larger functions.
