Pros & Cons of Living in Lakeside, San Diego

July 26, 2022 by Jeremy Lindy

If you are looking for some of the pros and cons of living in Lakeside, San Diego, look no further! Here we have compiled an overview of some reasons you'll love living in Lakeside, CA - located just outside of San Diego - as well as some reasons you might not. It's always hard to narrow down the good and the bad before making the commitment and actually living somewhere. We hope this helps give you a good idea of what to expect in beautiful Lakeside, California.

When you think of California living, what do you think of? Probably something along the lines of beautiful beaches, surfing, and an expensive cost of living. California is also home to some of the world's best national parks that offer epic hiking trails, lakes, and camping options. So how does all this fit in with Lakeside, San Diego?

Where is Lakeside, San Diego Located?

Lakeside is a suburb of San Diego, located about 10 minutes from downtown San Diego and only a few more to the coast. From Lakeside, you can absolutely zip over to the coast in under 20 mins - but you are also right in the midst of phenomenal hiking trails along with three reservoirs, a lake, and even horseback riding!

With plenty of water activities right in town, very close proximity to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and even local Rodeo events we think Lakeside offers the best of both worlds with something for everyone.

Pros and Cons of Living in Lakeside

As with any area, there are going to be pros and cons of living in Lakeside. It's up to you to decide whether the good outweighs the bad or vice versa.

PRO: More Affordable Housing Options

One of the most notable pros to living in Lakeside, is that the community is relatively affordable. There are a variety of home size and style options - from apartments to single-family homes and larger estates. The cost of living is still high when compared to other parts of the country, but it is significantly lower than in San Diego proper.

San Diego is known for being one of the most pet-friendly cities in the United States. With a plethora of dog-friendly beaches, parks, and hiking trails, your furry friend will love living in San Diego just as much as you do. The city also has a wide variety of pet-friendly accommodations, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly motels. Whether you're a long-time resident or a newcomer, you'll appreciate the many pet-friendly amenities that San Diego has to offer.

CON: Limited Public Transportation

Although Lakeside offers a lot in the way of outdoor activities, one of the downsides is the lack of public transportation. If you don't have a car, you may find it difficult to get around town and to neighboring cities. The community is continuing to work on expanding its public transportation options, but for now, it's something to keep in mind.

PRO: Plenty of Recreational Opportunities

Lakeside is a great place to call home if you love spending time outdoors. As we mentioned, there are three reservoirs, a lake, and horseback riding options all within the town limits. And if you're looking for something more adventurous, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is only a short drive away. There's also no shortage of golf courses and tennis courts in the area.

CON: Hot Summers

Another downside to living in Lakeside, CA is the hot summers. Temperatures can reach well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, making it difficult to be outside for extended periods of time. If you're not a fan of the heat, you may want to consider another location.

PRO: Close Proximity to San Diego

One of the best things about Lakeside is its close proximity to San Diego. You can be in downtown San Diego in less than 30 minutes, making it easy to take advantage of all the city has to offer. Whether you're looking for a night out on the town or a day at the zoo, you won't have to go far.

CON: Limited Job Opportunities

Although Lakeside is close to San Diego, the town itself doesn't offer a lot in the way of job opportunities. If you're looking to live in Lakeside and work in the area, you may have to commute to neighboring cities.

PRO: Excellent Educational Options

If you're looking to move to Lakeside with kids, you'll be happy to know that the town offers excellent educational opportunities. There are a number of public and private schools in the area, as well as a community college. Schools located in and around Lakeside, San Diego which serve the students of the town consistently rank high on both state and national levels.

CON: Stagnant Population Growth

One of the downsides to Lakeside's excellent educational opportunities is that the town's population growth has been stagnant in recent years. Over the last few, Lakeside's population has very minutely decreased. This can be attributed to the high cost of living in the area, as well as the limited job opportunities.

All in all, Lakeside is a great place to call home. It offers affordable housing options, plenty of recreational opportunities, and is close to San Diego. The hot summers and lack of public transportation may be downsides for some, but overall, for most people, the pros outweigh the cons.
