Bruce and Barbara Gimbel were devoted philanthropists, and he was the former chairman and chief executive of Gimbels, the famed department store founded by his great grandfather in 1842. Gimbels opened its New York City flagship in 1910 and quickly became the retail rival of Macy’s, winning the hearts of shoppers and Hollywood alike.
