7 Tips for a Smooth Moving Process

It’s always a good idea to focus on the positives, but life sure does make it difficult from time to time. Take the process of moving, for instance. The long-term vision is that you’ll be happy and settled in a home that’s right for you; the short-term reality is that moving is a series of headaches, or at least it is if we’re not careful. The stress of moving house has been compared to the stress of getting a divorce, so clearly, there are some things people are not doing correctly. So let’s change this. Below, we take a look at seven tips that’ll making moving all the less stressful. It might not be fun, but you won’t be tearing your hair out, at least!

Identify Your Needs

The first problem is that people go to see so many different homes. They’re forever walking around different homes, and it’s understandable that it becomes a little tiring. One way to avoid this issue is to identify your needs, and then only go to see homes that meet your requirements. Of course, you can’t have a long list -- but a few non-negotiable essentials are fine. It’ll save you a lot of time and energy, and will help you to avoid that burnout feeling, which is when you’re almost happy to accept any place so long as you don’t have to keep viewing homes.

Give It Time

Folding a napkin can be stressful if you have half a second to do it. The more time you have, the less under pressure you’ll feel. The less pressure there is, the smoother the process! When it comes to something as monumental as buying a home, there’s little to be gained from rushing through everything. Instead, give yourself a long time-frame in which to find the house and move. There will be a few restraints, but you’ll likely have more control than you realize.

Work With the Pros

You’re likely not very experienced when it comes to moving home. You may have only moved once or twice in your life, if that, and that’s not enough to be a master of the process. Fortunately, there are people on hand who have done this time and time again, and who can help make the process more straightforward: the professionals. When it comes to the buying process, it’s best to work with a real estate attorney. They’ll help to ensure that all the paperwork has been completed correctly. During the moving process, look at hiring professional movers like Colonial Van Lines.. It’s chaotic trying to transport all your goods from one home to the other, and especially so when you don’t know what you’re doing. The professionals exist to make your life easier: use them!

Clearing Out

But of course, to speak of hiring professional movers is getting ahead of ourselves a little bit. Before they can work, you’ll need to pack up all your belongings. And you’re going to figure out just how headache-inducing this is, especially if you’ve got several years’ worth of belongings in your home. As such, it may be a good idea to have a clear out first. It’s much easier to move when you’re traveling light! Every homeowner has a tendency to accumulate clutter. Bring all those items you haven’t touched in several months together, and get selling (this is also a good way to raise some much needed and appreciated funds, too).

Prepared to Move

Life will carry on even when you’re moving. You can make everything easier by putting certain aspects on autopilot. Prepare meals in advance, or put money in the budget for takeout food. If you’ve got kids, then drop them off at their grandparents' house for a few days during the move.

Treat Yourself Well

You’ll also want to treat yourself well during the moving process. Stress builds up if we’re not eating well, exercising, relaxing, and so forth. Instead of getting caught up in the chaos of the moving tornado, take some time out, and do something that relaxes you. It’ll take the edge off the pressure when it’s beginning to build.

Go With the Flow

Finally, you’ll find that everything runs a lot smoother if you’ve got the right attitude. Life is half of what happens to us, half of how we react. If you’re fully aware that it’s impossible to control every aspect of the moving process, you’ll be sufficiently ready to handle the move. There’s going to be fun moments, there will also be frustrating moments. Don’t put too much stock in either emotion. Eventually, you’ll end up in a home you love.
