What to Expect When You Visit an Orthodontist

You may have been told by a dentist that braces are in your future or it may be that you just haven't been happy with the shape of your teeth for a while. But, if you're considering orthodontic treatment to improve your smile and oral health, you might be wondering what to expect during your first visit to an orthodontist. Don't worry. Orthodontists are highly trained professionals who are dedicated to helping you achieve a beautiful, healthy smile.

Initial Consultation and Examination

When seeing an orthodontist for the first time, expect a comprehensive examination of your teeth, jaws, and bite. The initial consultation is important so that the orthodontist can understand your specific needs and develop a personalized treatment plan.

During the appointment, the orthodontist or a trained assistant will take a series of digital X-rays, photographs, and possibly dental impressions of your teeth to help the orthodontist analyze your bite, identify any misalignments, and determine the best course of action.

Clinical Assessment and Treatment Planning

The orthodontist will then perform a thorough clinical examination of your mouth, assessing the position and health of your teeth, gums, and jaws. They may ask you to bite down and evaluate how your upper and lower teeth fit together. This examination allows the orthodontist to diagnose any orthodontic issues, such as crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, or crossbite.

After gathering all the necessary information, the orthodontist will discuss their findings with you and explain the recommended treatment options.

Addressing Concerns and Questions

Expect your ortho to talk to you about any and all questions you may have about the entire process. Also, expect a good talking to about how important good oral hygiene is while you have braces. The staff will also discuss how to take care of the braces and/or aligners as well.

It may be that you will also need to have some teeth pulled to create more space for the teeth to fall into place. If this is your case, they'll discuss the procedure and let you know about any limitations you may experience while wearing braces, such as forgoing sticky candies, hard nuts, or peanut brittle!

Cost and Payment Options

The initial consultation is also an opportunity for you to ask about the cost of treatment and available payment options. Many orthodontic offices offer financing plans or accept dental insurance to help make treatment more affordable. And don't forget your local bank or credit union! They can be a great source for a personal loan that may work to your advantage for the costs.

Beginning Treatment

If you decide to proceed with treatment, the orthodontist will schedule a follow-up appointment to begin the process. This may involve taking additional records, such as dental molds, and preparing your teeth for the placement of braces or other appliances.

Ongoing Care and Monitoring

Throughout your orthodontic journey, you can expect regular check-ups with your orthodontist, typically every 4-8 weeks. During these appointments, the orthodontist will monitor your progress, make any necessary adjustments to your braces or aligners, and ensure that your treatment is on track.

It's important to maintain excellent oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Your orthodontist will provide you with specific instructions on how to brush and floss effectively around your braces or aligners.

Achieving Your New Smile

As your treatment progresses, you will begin to notice gradual improvements in the alignment of your teeth. The duration of treatment varies depending on the complexity of your case but typically ranges from 12-24 months.

By working closely with your orthodontist and following their instructions, you can achieve a healthier, more confident smile that lasts a lifetime.
