Saatchi Art’s The Other Art Fair (TOAF)

  • The Brooklyn Expo Center. (map)

For its 6th New York edition, TOAF will showcase the work of 130 emerging artists from across the world. As part of Bombay Sapphire’s #FindYourCanvas initiative, which seeks to reawaken everyone’s inner creativity, the fair will feature the brand’s Canvas Lab workshops that will help introduce fairgoers to a range of art-related activities across a variety of different mediums. Launched at the TOAF LA fair earlier this fall, which included classes led by celebrity hair colorist Daniel Moon, makeup illusionist Mimi Choi, and Emmy-award winning producer and actor James Bland, the immersive series will return to NY’s lineup with workshops led by fashion designer Aurora James, photographer Raven B. Verona, graphic designers Ramzy Masri and Jessica Walsh, and entrepreneur and DJ Amrit

SCHEDULE OF CANVAS LAB WORKSHOPS

·       Thursday, 11/7 7PM – 8PM: ‘Learning the Best Side’ with Raven B. Verona

o   Raven B will work with attendees to give them the tools to capture great portraits, both candid and posed. She will show them her process of portrait taking as well as explain what she thinks makes a great portrait photo.

·       Thursday, 11/7 8:30PM – 9:30PM: ‘Of Rainbows – Sustainable Fabric Dying Workshop’ led by Aurora James

o   We all see the world in different ways, we see colors and process colors differently. But what is our connection to color, how can we make color? Where do our favorite colors come from? Of Rainbows is a workshop hosted by Brother Vellies founder, Aurora James, experienced by you. Join BV at The Other Art Fair to experience vegetable dyes from Avocado Pink to Ouagadougou Indigo. Dye one of your favorite things, or one of ours.  A Selection of hand-picked vintage apparel will be there to hand dye the shades you dreamt in the night before.

·       Friday, 11/8 4PM – 5:30PM: ‘Create Your Canvas’ led by Jessica Walsh

o    Jessica will take you through examples of her studios photo work & set design, answering questions along the way. After learning some tips and tricks workshop attendees will plan and execute their own mini-photo shoot. This will include ideation, planning & executing a photo that expresses how each group interprets the idea of “Find Your Canvas”. Every team will have the opportunity to style, paint, and of course, play with props galore! The workshop will end with some photo moments in front of the custom designed canvases.

·       Saturday, 11/9 12PM – 1PM: ‘Beat Matching’ with AMRIT

o   Created for the absolute beginner with no prior experience, a 1-hour class that will focus on basic beat matching and walk through a general introduction of CDJ's. Attendees can expect to walk out with an understanding of mixing and transitioning between tracks.

·       Saturday, 11/9 2:30PM – 3:30PM: ‘Digital Art & Activism’ led by Ramzy Masri

o   Social media has changed everything, including the art world. "Instagrammable" art draws in huge crowds to traditional art museums and galleries, while work that doesn't fit neatly into a feed remains on the fringes. How can the art world adapt to a changing landscape? Has the superficiality of Instagram diluted the inspirational power of good art? Or has the proliferation of art education and technology enabled a new age of creators? In this workshop, you'll learn about the power of art to create positive social change, and experiment to find your unique voice. Activities will include paired off break-out sessions where guests will draw and write.
