Galerie Gmurzynska will be presenting their first New York exhibition dedicated to Austrian artist Arnulf Rainer. The show, which will be on view from April 15th through June 12th, will feature a selection of works that is representative of the artist’s different periods and techniques.

I would love for you to consider including this art exhibition as an exciting no cost option for New Yorkers looking for things to do in the city.

The exhibition will showcase early monochrome overpaintings from the 1950’s and late, colorful, light layered drawings and paintings, with motifs from the classical fields of knowledge, such as anatomy, flora, fauna and landscapes. They will also spotlight Arnulf Rainer’s Buchübermalungen (book overpaintings), antique books from the artist’s personal library that have been artistically intervened over the last 40 years. These books have been kept at the artists house and have rarely been shown to the public.

Highlighted works at the exhibition will include:

  • "Recueil de Charges et de Têtes de Différens Caracteres, Gravées a l'eau forte d'après les desseins de Leonard de Vinci. Précédé d'une lettre de M. Mariette sur ce Peintre Florentin," Charles-Antoine Jombert, Paris 1767 (Nouvelle Édition) from 1977. Oil pastels and black pencil on 64 pages and the title page of a book with gold embossed marbled brown leather binding and etchings.

  • Serie Traumland, mixed media on heliograph from 1998/99.

  • Untitled, oil pastels and oil on photo on wood from 1986.
