Whiskey Wednesdays With Clyde May's Whiskey

Annabella Pardo

Available since 1946, legal since 2001, and launched that same year - Clyde May’s Whiskey represents more than 75 years of authenticity, perseverance, and family. The greatest moonshine story you’ve never heard of is both the official state spirit of Alabama and the first official state spirit in the country.

Born before the Great Depression, Lewis Clyde May was a man made of grit and resilience. After serving in WWII, Clyde made his way back home to the Conecuh Ridge and began crafting the finest spirits around using a hand-built pot still, even if his methods were slightly illegal (distilling became legal in Alabama in 2001). His high standards and commitment to quality cemented his reputation as the "most-wanted" moonshiner in Alabama.

Fast forward years later, Clyde May’s legacy lives on through his whiskeys and bourbons, made with a proprietary mash bill and aged in first-fill, new American oak barrels. The portfolio includes Clyde May’s Original Alabama Style Whiskey, Clyde May’s Straight Bourbon, Clyde May’s Straight Rye, and Clyde May’s Special Reserve Bourbon.

Clyde May’s has major plans for 2023 with the construction of a state-of-the-art distillery in Troy, Alabama, and several new product launches. As American whiskey sales continue to rise, the official spirit of Alabama has no intention of slowing down.
