How Stress Affects the Body: Men’s Health Edition
Stress is something that most of us deal with daily. Whether it’s due to finances or an overwhelming workload, it seems that feelings of stress have become more normal than not. While a little stress can be beneficial and motivate us to be more productive, too much can become extremely harmful to our bodies, taking a toll mentally and physically. It’s quite common for males to ignore the effects of being stressed, and refuse to seek help when they begin to notice symptoms. They often believe that admitting to these feelings will be seen as a sign of weakness, and typically try to “power through.” There are many ways to treat stress, however dealing with specific situations can become tricky.
In honor of Men’s Health Month, we’re sharing a couple areas in which stress can impact men as well as how they can go about treating these effects.
On your body...
There are many ways in which stress, and the symptoms that come along with it, can impact your body function. Everyone handles and carries their stress differently, so symptoms may vary. However, it is fairly common for men to experience stress-induced insomnia, weight loss or gain, and even sexual dysfunction. Of those mentioned, the most common outcomes of stress men are embarrassed to seek treatment for are those that affect their sex life. Luckily, there are a number of ways to treat these problems in the comfort of your own home. Telemedicine companies like hims make it possible for men to consult a licensed physician who can diagnose the issue and suggest a treatment plan. For example, if you are experiencing premature ejaculation, your doctor may recommend using a lidocaine spray. If you are looking for an alternate approach to treating erectile dysfunction, consider incorporating meditation and a healthy diet into your day to day routine.
On your mood...
Many men who are under significant amounts of stress tend to bottle up their emotions. Often the damage goes unnoticed until they’ve reached the breaking point. This can leave them feeling overwhelmed, angry, and depressed. With these feelings comes an enormous sense of anxiety. While meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can be helpful in getting your feet back on the ground, if you’re finding that the stress is too much to handle on your own, it may be time to seek professional guidance and advice. Talking through the issues that are triggering anxiety can help you understand there are some things you can’t and won’t have control of and give you a handle on your challenges.
It’s time to end the stigma around stress!
Recognize the damage your mind and body are receiving and take the correct steps to alleviate yourself. There is no shame in seeking help.
