4 DIY Kitchen Remodeling Ideas and Hacks

When you get tired of looking at the same drab, boring kitchen and churning out the same uninspired meals, start dreaming big. You don’t have to be a master craftsman to create the modern, hardworking kitchen you’ve always wanted. All it takes is a little confidence and some tools. It’s your kitchen, so do what you want with it. There are thousands of DIY kitchen remodeling ideas out there—find a few that speak to you and fit your budget, skill level, and image of a perfect kitchen.

Use Curtain Rods for Storage

No one ever seems to have enough storage space, especially in the kitchen. When you need to maximize space, look under the sink. It’s usually a wasteland of cleaners, dirty sponges, and damp rags, but you can create more storage space by extending a small curtain rod from wall to wall under the sink. Use it to hang spray bottles and rags, and you instantly have more space in the cabinet for additional supplies.

Create Space and Upgrade Lighting

Believe it or not, some kitchens still have drop ceilings. If yours is one of them, then get rid of it yesterday. Taking that out will add another foot of space overhead. Once that’s gone, you’ll need to get some better-looking light fixtures. Fluorescent light bulbs will flood your kitchen with light—but they also look like they belong in a locker room. Find something that’s more tasteful and that will still give you adequate light, such as modern light fixtures with LED bulbs.

Add Granite Countertops

Add some sizzle to your new kitchen. Granite tops aren’t cheap, but they’re highly functional and beautiful. Plus, they probably won’t go out of style anytime soon. Installing these isn’t easy, but a more experienced DIYer could do the job. If you aren’t confident in your abilities, then call in a pro. They’ll have all the necessary tools to cut holes in the granite and make your countertops look superb.

Refurbish the Cabinets

You don’t have to rip out and replace every cabinet in the kitchen to get a new look. Leave your cabinets where they are and give them a face-lift instead. Your first option is to replace the cabinet doors with more modern options. This doesn’t have to be expensive, but it will take some hunting on your part. Try checking resale shops for the same size cabinets. If they match up, buy them and put those doors on your cabinets. If that’s too much work, then simply paint your existing cabinetry. A new coat of paint or a different finish will give the whole kitchen a quick upgrade for little money.
